A clear framework. Your own way forward.
An overview of how therapy can begin and how payment works in Switzerland.
From the first enquiry to the final meeting
Initial contact
By phone or a short email, we discuss whether the service may suit you and whether an appointment is available. Personal health details belong in a confidential conversation.
First meeting
You share what brings you here. We talk about expectations, questions, confidentiality and practical arrangements. You do not have to commit to ongoing therapy.
Agreeing on goals
We explore what you would like to change and how we might work together. Goals can evolve over time.
Working together
We focus on the areas we have agreed on and review what is helpful. The frequency and length of therapy depend on your needs and the practical framework.
Ending therapy
We reflect on what you have learned, consider strategies for everyday life and, where possible, plan the ending together.
Basic insurance and medical prescriptions
Since 1 July 2022, psychological psychotherapy provided by authorised practitioners can be billed to Swiss compulsory basic health insurance when the legal requirements are met and a medical prescription is in place. A GP with the required qualifications or a psychiatrist can usually issue this prescription.
Each prescription covers up to 15 sessions. Following an exchange between the prescribing clinician and the therapist, a second prescription for up to 15 more sessions may be issued.
Continuing beyond a total of 30 sessions requires prior approval from the insurer. A report is submitted for assessment by its medical adviser; a psychiatric assessment may also be required, depending on the circumstances. The clinicians involved coordinate the necessary steps.
Your annual deductible and co-payment apply, as they do for other basic insurance benefits. Services are billed at the applicable tariff. Your insurer and prescribing doctor can explain the arrangements for your circumstances.
Self-payment & supplementary insurance
You can also pay for therapy yourself. Contributions from supplementary insurance depend on your policy and its recognition requirements. Ask your insurer about possible cover before treatment starts. Reimbursement should not be assumed.
If you need to cancel
Please cancel at least 24 hours before an appointment so the time can be offered elsewhere. Late cancellations or missed appointments may result in a charge payable by you; the exact policy is discussed before therapy begins. Missed appointments are not billed to basic insurance as completed treatment.
You do not have to find all the words yet.
For an initial enquiry, your name and a way to reach you are enough. Please do not send personal health information by email.
